The winery of the Serbian Orthodox monastery of Tvrdoš near Trebinje carries on a tradition of monastic wine cellars whose traces go back to the 15th century. Monks led by Hegumen Sava revived wine production on a large scale, and the monastery tends about 70 hectares of Vranac on the Trebinje plain and about 60 hectares of young vines in Popovo Polje.
The wine matures in two cellars: a 15th-century stone cellar where Vranac ages in oak barrels, and a modern underground cellar that moves the wine by gravity. The 2009 Grand Reserve Vranac won gold at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2018.
