Matalj is run by Nikola Mladenović, an engineer who took up his family's winemaking tradition. The hillside winery stands in Bukovo near Negotin, in the Negotinska Krajina, close to the Romanian and Bulgarian borders. Its three vineyards, Kremen, Terasa and Bukovo, cover 17 to 20 hectares, partly on Danube terraces.
Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc grow alongside the local Bagrina, Tamjanika and Bukovski. Production is kept small, and Falstaff rates the winery four stars.
