Dom Pérignon takes its name from the Benedictine monk Dom Pierre Pérignon, who, contrary to a common myth, did not invent sparkling wine. The first vintage was 1921 and went on sale in 1936. The brand passed to Moët & Chandon in 1927 and is made in its cellars in Épernay.
It is a vintage-only champagne, made only in years the house judges good enough and always blended from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. It is released in stages called Plénitudes: P1 after roughly 8 to 10 years, P2 after 15 to 20 and P3 after 30 to 40.
